The same sun grows different meals in different lands, not with the intent to compete or compare, but to celebrate diversity and uniqueness. Traditions and beliefs that define humanity aren’t to be considered a “trademark”, but instead a power to look at the world in awe and experience one another’s love and culture. Oftentimes, we allow our differences in culture to divide us and create a barrier, when in reality, it should bring us together. Culture was always meant to be a bridge to connect humanity.
Distinct cultures show up in everyday life, especially in Levittown. You can see diversity everywhere, whether it’s at places like the Levittown Public Library, where community events bring people from different backgrounds together through activities and celebrations, or at the International Night at the Island Trees District. These events reflect diversity as students from many backgrounds share traditions, languages, foods, and experiences, bringing the community together through culture and understanding.
International Night is a perfect example of how culture brings people together rather than dividing them. Walking into the event feels as if you’re stepping into different parts of the world all at once. The aroma of different foods filled the hallways, colorful displays reflected the hard work and pride behind each culture, and the music created an atmosphere full of fascination. Families moved from room to room, discovering cultures that were unique in their own way. Nepal carried a calm, peaceful, Zen atmosphere, while India and Pakistan filled the space with lively music, bright colors and a rich aroma of spices. China shared traditions through cultural displays and fortune cookies. All the rooms allowed students and families to open their minds and appreciate all these cultures in a welcoming manner. The event reminded everyone that cultural identities exist to bring people together, not to create division. All these rooms served the same purpose of connection and learning.
Culture allows everyone to understand one another beyond surface appearances or stereotypes. Events like International Night remind people that every tradition, belief, and background carries a deeper meaning and value. Instead of allowing cultures to create division, they should be appreciated and celebrated for the way they bring people together. Like flowers blooming in the same garden, culture was never meant to emphasize division, but to reveal the beauty of humanity’s diverse traditions, beliefs, and ways of life while bringing people together.
