Q: What motivated you to work in the field of special education?
A: In the early stages of my career, I had the privilege of working under a supervisor who became a significant mentor to me. Her role as the Director of Special Education inspired me to pursue a career in this field. Initially trained as a school psychologist, I decided to pursue an administrative degree with her guidance, aiming to impact more children and families. I realized that in a broader role, I could support staff and districts effectively by ensuring the provision of adequate support, services and programs to increase student success.
Q: What is the most rewarding part of helping students with diverse learning needs succeed?
A: Helping students with different learning needs is incredibly rewarding. When students start believing in themselves, they gain confidence to handle any challenge. This growth is meaningful for both teachers and parents, who feel great pride in seeing their children succeed. Supporting students as they reach their full potential is a powerful experience that is extremely rewarding.
Q: How do you encourage empathy and inclusion among students in our schools?
A: I foster empathy and inclusion by supporting teachers to engage with every student. By working collaboratively with teachers and being readily available to support them, I enhance the support for our students. When we work together as a class, school, and district, and prioritize kindness and collaboration, we build a stronger, more united community.
