Island Trees sophomore, Olivia Carbonaro, is a superstar in the soccer net. Having supervised a varsity soccer game last week, I knew I needed to interview the powerhouse 10th grader.
Olivia began playing soccer at 4 years old, starting her career with the Island Trees Soccer Club. Fast forward 10 years later, she was called up to the Island Trees Varsity Women’s Soccer team as an 8th grader. Being a goalie, the pressure is always high. However, she expresses that she loves the feeling of making saves for her team. She commends her team for being close-knit and having a strong connection. The Lady Dawgs have started their season with a 2-2-2 record, hoping to secure a spot in the future playoffs.
Coach Danielle Hastings shares,
“Olivia epitomizes the term “leader” in all aspects of the word. There is no doubt that she has incredible talent as a goalkeeper, but what’s more important is her ability to continuously lift others up while encouraging them to give their all each and every day. Even though she is only a sophomore, she is the voice that her teammates look to for guidance on the field. She leads by example at practice, in games, and in the hallways. Olivia always strives to be the very best version of herself and consistently seeks to become better at her craft. It has been a pleasure to watch her grow thus far as an athlete and as a person. We can’t wait to see all that she does in her time here at Island Trees. We are truly lucky to have her on our team.”
When asked about her future plans, she shared she would like to attend and play soccer at Iona University or Stony Brook University. She would like to major in Education. When she’s not in the net, Olivia also plays on the school’s basketball and lacrosse teams. She is also a member of the robotics and key club at Island Trees High School.
