“Preservation of one’s own culture does not require contempt or disrespect for other cultures”– Cesar Chavez
Culture allows us to express ourselves creatively, helps us define who we are and allows us to create special moments with the people we love most. Throughout the world there are several cultures, which we share from generation to generation. Among these many cultures, my family and I have the tradition of celebrating Christmas every year. We usually gather the whole family in a house to share a good day, play family games such as monopoly or guess the song, and at the end of the day we have a delicious meal with everyone.
Every March 24th until March 30th, my parents, my sister and I stay home to watch Jesus movies. One of my favorite movies is Noah’s Ark because of the story and how the circumstances unfold. The day is without the distraction of cell phones. In other words, it is a day to spend with family and remember the sacrifice that Jesus made for our sins.
The last cultural tradition that I have is the New Year. It is a special day to spend with the family because we welcome a new year with new challenges, goals and new learning. Before midnight, we make a doll and fill it with many fireworks, then light it on fire. This rids the bad vibes of the year. Then, my cousins and I blow up fireworks until dawn and at the end of the night we have a banquet to welcome the new year.
Additionally, on the weekends, my cousins and my uncles go to play soccer with a bet so that we are motivated to win and have a fun time to distract ourselves for a while, leaving our cell phones behind and practicing a little sport.
In conclusion, culture is part of our identity and creates moments that we can remember with great joy.
